We also replaced the older servo and spindle drives, but, we continued to use the Inductosyn scales with newer interface electronics. Two types of sensors have been used; limit switches and proximity sensors . Limit switches are used for safety against exceeding work space limits, while proximity sensors are used to adjust the Home Position in the CNC control (Fig.4). The Home Position is defined by the clearance between the roller and mandrel which equals the blank thickness. Wiring system of the actuators and sensors is illustrated in Figs.5 and 6. The connections for both servomotors are the same, so only the wiring for Z-axis servomotor is presented.

AC servo motors have been utilized due to their high intermittent torque, high torque to inertia ratio, high speeds, good velocity control, less maintenance and quiet performance. One such upgrade, Fidia’s Velocity Five multi-axis trajectory control technology, provides a dynamic-selectable set of roughing and finishing parameters. These parameters are said to enable the user to execute fast and highly accurate milling by improving the acceleration control techniques. At the time of writing, Century Tool estimates the Velocity Five upgrade can reduce finish milling time on 3D profiles between 15 and 20 percent and roughing between 30 and 40 percent. The machined surface quality shows significant improvement and faster execution of machining for small radii areas. Century Tool was founded in 1974 and has experienced consistent growth over most of its history.
A laser maintains the Rotation Tool Center Point function, which is another feature that the Fidia control software manages. The laser will accurately measure the length and diameter of the cutter at each tool change, which provides for a continuously accurate height setting on the mold from cutter to cutter. The Fidia control shown here is one of the first retrofitted systems that Century Tool and Gage had installed on a CNC machine. The first control was fitted onto a Heyligenstaedt vertical mill in 1987. Today, the company has more than 30 Fidia controls with plans to add more in the near future. This machine had for it's control an Allen Bradley CNC. We replaced it with a Dynapath Delta 50 CNC.

The recommended mandrel speeds for spinning process are from 200 to 800 RPM. The size capacity of the machine can accommodate 380 mm blank diameter, 300 mm maximum cup diameter, and 80 mm maximum cup height. Cost of the retrofitted machine is considerably lower than a newly purchased CNC spinning machine, but is higher compared to conventional manual spinning lathe which is compromised by the higher production rates. Trial runs showed that the machine can produce cups with surface roughness in the order of 2 μm and roundness error of approximately 200 μm.

It is said to be the only software that can generate the tool path right off the surface. “It creates a greater amount of contact points, producing a more accurate part,” Mr. Guckian says. Surface quality was found to be superior to that achieved by El-Khabeery et al. , Chen et al. , and Takaishi . The recorded quality characteristics find applicability in industrial fans and blowers where the control of air flow is influenced by the surface finish and shape accuracy. It is based on involute curve in the forward pass and a linear backward pass. The involute path is recommended due to less force, stresses, and wrinkling . Figure14 shows the setup of the spinning process where the blank is clamped between mandrel and holder.
