Max is a musician/producer, consultant, author and youth music tutor, specialising in Rap, Urban & Electronic music, soundtracks, remixes and peer-to-peer education projects. They got 3 Leeds based artists - Pixie Cola, Ato and Master Soulboy - who had never made music with each other before. The guys sat down with the artists to talk about the experience, played the collaborative track and of course played their picks of up and coming UK talent. Following the success of #FillUpTheDome in November, where Cassper succesfully sold out one of Jozi’s biggest stadia – the first time a local artist has achieved such a feat – he can indeed tell his Mama that he’s made it. This was the debut single from his second album “Refiloe” which recently reached platinum status.
It combines ad libs and rap sections with Carey’s sung vocals. “Milkshake” is a song written by Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams, otherwise known as The Neptunes. It is Kelis’ highest charting single to date and the lyrics utilise euphemism and playground style wordplay along with a simple, catchy melody to bring the whole song together.



The likes of King Kunta are crowd pleasers, a raging funk masterclass named after the main character in Roots. There’s chaos throughout, punctuated by moments of beauty and Thundercat’s ever-present bass. But you never know what you are going to get with each track which is fine by us. It’s not just in his lyrics or songs like “You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives”either, it’s a personality he embodies through his day to day living. In our conversation, M.I has a modest confidence; everything he says feels like it’s been pondered on many times before our talk. His calculative demeanour has undoubtedly contributed to his success, but the dip in his aura at the mention of the problematic side to Rendezvous was unmistakable.

If you are balancing anything in the centre over a pair of headphones, you could very potentially be making the wrong decisions. Creating a perfect vocal balance on a pair of headphones has a very real probability of not translating very accurately on a speaker or soundbar system. Sure, you are hearing a very rough representation of centre image information over headphones, but it isn’t very accurate; it’s collapsed somewhere inside your head. Which again makes sense, as you only have sound blasting directly into the left and right ear. If you think about the most important elements of your music, most of them are in the centre most of the time. These are the backbone, the foundation and in many instances the main hooks for your productions.

Originally, the idea for the second Avalanches LP was a take on “ambient world music”, but this quickly shifted directions, each new overhaul requiring more ideas, more samples. Since I Left You’s eponymous track welcomes the listener to this cruise ship around the world with a perfect opening statement that sounds like an unturned gem from a lost soul complication. As silk strings and doo-wop harmonies cascade down to give setting, a flute comes in to pour colour from end to end, while the drums dye the scene with a slight hip-hop tint. Though classified as instrumental hip-hop, its complexities reach far beyond just boom-bap, to the worlds of funk, psychedelia, ambient and soundtrack music. The grand total is a record that’s as dark and jazzy as a smoky metropolis, punctuated with an alley-crowding number of textural flavours. The meticulosity of Shadow’s approach to sampling is apparent when examining the skeleton of his beats, where a single one could have a kick drum from one song, the snare from another.
One artist I want to focus on in particular though is that of Dexter Wansel. Lastly, I couldn’t mention vocoders without bringing up Herbie Hancock’s 1977 albumSunlight. The album features plenty of vocoder, in particular the tracks Thought it was You and Come Running to Me, again sampled by Slum Villageand also Thundercat. However by the time the 80s came by, music and cinema has a more dystopian outlook of the future. Culture seemed less optimistic and more paranoid about the cyberpunk world communicated in films such as Total Recall, Blade Runner, Akira and The Terminator, and the Vocoder was the synth that narrated our journey into this we were told of. Since Science Fiction had been prevalent in film, television and literature, we had lofty visions of the future.
